I’ve got a dog-free Saturday coming up which means…ROADTRIP!! Granted we will most likely keep within the confines of Pennsylvania, but what direction should we head in?!

As you can see, we’ve been to a lot of vintage and cool old places in PA, and they’re all listed on the Pennsylvania RetroRoadMAP:

But where to go? What to discover? Sometimes the options can be overwhelming!

Hooray! I’m planning the first RetroRoadmap “Retro Road Trip / Rock Tour” to South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin TX coming this March. RetroRoadhusband will be playing some gigs along the way as well, so we’re both very excited about this adventure!

IMG_1897As you can see by taking a look at the list of RetroRoadMAPs on the RetroRoadMAPs page, there are many states that we don’t even have one entry for, and I’m hoping this trip will take care of some of that.

So far the states we’re hoping to add to the RetroRoadMAPs include:

West Virginia

and the District of Columbia

Retro Road Trip to SXSW for RetroRoadmap.comAnd while  the states below already have a RetroRoadmap with at least one entry, I’m hoping to add some more cool old places to these RetroRoadMAPs:

North Carolina

and anyplace the road will take us!

Can’t wait to be a Retro Road Reporter! I’ll be photoing, posting, Facebooking, Tweeting, and (horrors!) even video-ing!

I’ve already got some places pinned to our map, but if you have any suggestions, please post them in the comments below.

And if you’re on our route and would like to meet, or host a gig for the RetroRoadhusband that would be swell too!

Happy Motoring!

I’m in the process of uploading quite a few photos that I took YEARS AGO to the Retro Roadmap Photo Archive on Flickr and am kicking myself for not taking better notes back in the late 1980’s early 90’s when I did take them. Can you help out?

Mister Donut Sign Near Gardner Fitchburg MA 1987-90

Like this way cool vintage Mobil gas station – I can picture where it was on the road in my head, but for the life of me I can’t remember if it was near Weirs Beach NH or Old Orchard Beach ME!

Mobil Gas Station 198? Maine or New Hampshire 1

If any of the photos in the RetroRoadmap Photo Archives collection ring a bell with you and you have any info or memories associated with them, please leave the info in the comments below, or if you’re a Flickr user, at the actual page. Hope everyone enjoys this walk down memory lane!

During my visit home one of the things  I am looking forward to is bringing the Retro Roadkids (aka niece/nephew) along for a day of Retro Roadmap research.

They are used to the driving “adventures” that they go on when I come home to visit, and hopefully look forward to them as much as I do. This also gives me an excuse to highlight places with kid appeal- like mini-golf, seaside amusements and whatnot.

I am in the lucky position of being the wacky aunt who blows into town at random times, mixes up everyone’s schedule and makes them travel to places not on their usual route.  This allows me to see some of the places that I miss and also expose the kids to some new scenery, while hopefully giving them an appreciation of the places I hold so dear.

I think it’s working! I was absolutely thrilled when my sister told me she overheard one Roadkid tell the other,

“Auntie says you take the highways

when you want to get somewhere fast,

but you take the small roads

when you want to look at stuff”.

So glad to be able to introduce the wonders of Retro Roadmapping to the young’uns.  It is always interesting to get their take on the places that we travel to, and in the future I hope to share their commentary and perhaps a photo or two, with you all.
